By emphasizing materials and textures over vibrant colors traditionally associated with Mexico and Mexican American art, she subverts stereotypes tied to her cultural background.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Curiel earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Kansas in 2021. In 2024, she was recognized on Dwell Magazine\u2019s Dwell 24, and in 2023, she was included in Sight Unseen\u2019s American Design Hot List. Each piece honors the labor-intensive techniques learned from my father on construction sites and reflects my journey as a two-time cancer survivor, contemplating the lasting impact I hope to make.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Blending American and Mexican influences, my practice merges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary art and design. By emphasizing textures and materials rather than the vibrant colors often associated with Mexico and Mexican American art, I challenge stereotypes and expand the dialogue on cultural expression.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Placing my work in spaces reminiscent of cleaning homes with my mother symbolizes reclaiming space and identity.
