Sumie García Hirata is a Mexican visual artist and filmmaker, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2011 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, specializing in film direction. Her work has been recognized in numerous national and international exhibitions, including at the OCCenter of Contemporary Art in California and the Pink Art Fair in Seoul.
In 2017, Sumie directed the documentary Relato Familiar, which was selected for the international competition at the Visions du Réel festival in Switzerland. Relato Familiar won the award for "Best Short Documentary" at the Morelia International Film Festival and Shorts México. Her work was also nominated for an Ariel Award in 2018 for Best Short Documentary.
Sumie has received the Jóvenes Creadores scholarship from FONCA twice (2015-2016, 2017-2018), strengthening her creative work and her commitment to exploring visual narratives that merge art with documentary filmmaking.
